Get to Know Me Better
My name is Paul Thomas (32, he/him), and I am a library specialist at the University of Kansas. In 2022, I earned a PhD in Library and Information Management from Emporia State University; I also hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology & Classics from the University of Kansas (2015), and a Master of Arts degree in Social Science from the University of Chicago (2016). I am currently finishing up my Master of Library Science degree at Emporia. My dissertation, "The Information Behavior of Wikipedia Fan Editors: A Digital (Auto)Ethnography", focused on the information behavior of fan editors on Wikipedia. In 2024, a heavily revised version of this work was published by Lexington Books as an entry in their "Communication Perspectives in Popular Culture" series. I've also written a general-interest book about the site, Inside Wikipedia (Rowman & Littlefield), which was released at the end of 2022.I'm a big media fan myself, and over the years I have written about a variety of media franchises; that said, the work closest to my heart is Exploring the Land of Ooo, a book about the production history of Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. The first edition was published in 2020 by the University of Kansas Libraries, and a heavily updated version was published by the University Press of Mississippi in 2023.I'm also fascinated with bats, specifically microbats. If you connect with me on Twitter, etc., expect a lot of bat content.
Union Guerrillas of Civil War Kansas:
Jayhawkers and Red Legs
Paul A. Thomas & Matt M. Matthews
The History Press
Spring 2025
Both before and during the American Civil War, ragtag groups of Kansas militants patrolled the Kansas-Missouri border. Known as “Jayhawkers” and later “Red Legs,” they raided anyone they believed sympathetic to secession. For many in the state, these irregular warriors were heroes fighting for a Free Kansas and preservation of the Union; for their victims, these men were little more than opportunistic thieves. James Montgomery teamed up with Harriet Tubman to lead the Combahee River Raid, an audacious mission in South Carolina that liberated more than 750 slaves. George H. Hoyt, who once defended famed abolitionist John Brown, became a leader of a contentious group of pro-Union partisans known as the “Red Legs.” Authors Paul A. Thomas and Matt M. Matthews seek to answer the question of who these men were.
The Information Behavior of Wikipedia Fan Editors:
A Digital (Auto)Ethnography
Paul A. Thomas
Lexington Books
August 2024
Situated at the intersection of library and information science (LIS), Wikipedia studies, and fandom studies, this book is a digital (auto)ethnography that documents the information behavior of Wikipedia “fan editors”—that is, individuals who edit articles about pop culture media. Given Wikipedia’s prominence in LIS and fan studies scholarship, both as one of the world’s most heavily used reference sources and as an important archive for fan communities, fan editors are a crucial component of this ecosystem as some of Wikipedia’s most active contributors. Through a combination of fieldwork observations, insight from key informants, and the author’s own experiences as a Wikipedia editor, this monograph provides a rich articulation of fan editor information behavior and offers a significant contribution to scholarship in a number of fields. Scholars of library and information science, media studies, fandom studies, and popular culture will find this book of particular interest.
"[This book] is a must read for all information behavior researchers and those who teach information behavior. Paul A. Thomas very successfully weaves the almost-mysterious experiences of Wikipedia fan editors with the theoretical insights reported in information behavior studies."—Dr. Ina Fourie
(Professor and Chair, School of Information Technology, University of Pretoria)

Analyzing "Adventure Time":
Critical Essays on Cartoon Network's World of Ooo
Paul A. Thomas (ed.)
McFarland & Company
July 2023
In 2010, Cartoon Network debuted a new animated series called Adventure Time, and within just a few short years the show became both a pop culture phenomenon and a critical darling. But despite all the admiration, not many works of scholarship have assessed the show through a critical lens. This anthology is an attempt to fill this scholarly oversight and spark a wider conversation about the show’s deeper themes. Across 15 scholarly essays, this book’s contributors study Adventure Time from a variety of angles, proving just how insightful the series really is.
"An incredible look at an often-overlooked staple of Cartoon Network, this text [is] a paradigmatic examination of [Adventure Time]."—Dr. David S. Silverman
(Communication & Humanities Instructor,
Kansas State University-Salina)

Paul A. Thomas
McFarland & Company
January 2019
"Wizard rock'—music based on the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling—is an idiosyncratic subgenre, with band names like Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys and The Whomping Willows. Drawing on input from insiders and fans, and interviews with more than a dozen wizard rockers, this book explores the history and aesthetics of the movement. An appendix lists dozens of popular bands, members and discographies: a must-have for fandom scholars and wizard rock devotees alike.
"Thomas’s take is a unique perspective, the first from the voice of a wizard rock musician who has done the legwork of participating in the wizard rock community. ... His work is focused on providing a wealth of knowledge on wizard rock practice."—Dr. Catherine Hall

Haunted Lawrence
Paul A. Thomas (Foreword by Beth Kornegay)
The History Press
Fall 2017
Founded in 1854 as an abolitionist outpost, Lawrence is a seemingly unassuming college town with a long history of hauntings. A ghostly guest never checked out of the Eldridge Hotel's mysterious room 506. Sigma Nu's fraternity house, the former home of Kansas's eighteenth governor, is still haunted by the specter of a young woman. Learn the tragic stories of Pete Vinegar, George Albach and Lizzie Madden and uncover the devilish truth behind the "legend" of Stull Cemetery. Author Paul Thomas reveals the ghoulish history behind these stories and many more.
"Lawrence has its fair share of haunts, many of which are entertainingly chronicled in Paul Thomas’ Haunted Lawrence."—Dan Coleman
